Remembering the Great War
Talk given at the AGM of the GVSG, May 2015, by Col. Peter Rostron
This article seeks to address three questions; why did the war come, and could we have done more to avoid it? How prepared were the protagonists for war, and how did Britain stand in this respect? What were the strategies of the opposing blocs, and how did they play out in the huge battles that characterised this first clash of industrialised societies? Finally, an attempt will be made to draw lessons from the conflict.
