Welcome to the web site of the Golden Valley Study Group
The Herefordshire Golden Valley follows the course of the River Dore, arising in the hills above Dorstone and passing through Peterchurch, Turnastone, Vowchurch, Bacton and Abbey Dore, joining the Monnow near Pontrilas. The many historic buildings and beautiful rural scenery provide a fascinating and rewarding backdrop to the activities of the Study Group.
The Group was based in the Golden Valley, south west of Hereford near the Welsh border. Its remit was to promote and encourage the public study and preservation of local history. The Group provided a community forum for discussions on local history, with a programme of talks and exploratory walks in and around the area. The Covid-19 pandemic led to a suspension of our activities, while we considered our future.
After 20 interesting years the steering Committee decided it was time to draw our activities to a close. ln our time we have produced two books ("Turnastone" and "The Man who Drowned the Meadows", a study of Rowland Vaughan), led a large number of enjoyable walks and hosted a variety of talks, all held locally. All these activities are documented on this website. ln June 2022 we shall have an exhibition in the Hub at Peterchurch of the late Carl Davies's photographs. That will be our final activity.
